Dennis Begos grew up just outside of New York City. For the past 20 years, he has lived and practiced medicine in the greater Boston area. After graduating from the University of Rochester with a BS degree in neuroscience. He spent 2 years studying medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He finished his MD at New York Medical College. Where he was a junior member of the medical student honor society Alpha Omega Alpha. After that, he did his general surgery residency at Yale University, spending a productive year of research. In the lab studying GI wound healing and laparoscopic colon surgery.
General Surgery and Colon and Rectal Surgery
In his final year of medical school, he was honored as Chief Resident. Then went on to a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic. He has a passion for teaching, and during his clinical career, he was an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine. At Tufts, he won numerous teaching awards for teaching medical students and residents. He was a pioneer in laparoscopic colon surgery, being the first surgeon in the Boston area to perform this procedure.
Believes teaching extends to his patients, as explaining their conditions. To them involves distilling complex topics down to understandable concepts. He firmly believes that the patient should be the key person in making decisions about their medical care—so many medical situations are not black or white, but exist in a gray area where there may be more than one correct option, and thus it is important for the patient to understand the issues at hand so they can make an informed decision. He was honored as a “Top Doctor” in Boston Magazine 10 years in a row and was also received a similar honor. In the US News and World Report rankings.
Numerous Leadership Roles
In addition to his clinical and academic practice, he has held numerous leadership roles. He was Chair of the Department of Surgery at Winchester Hospital for 10 years and President of the Medical Staff for 2 years. He has served on national committees for the American Society for Colon and Rectal Surgeons, and he has served as a board examiner for the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery. His clinical career was put on hold after a serious car accident in 2018, but he continues to be involved in medical education and writing. He has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, as well as book chapters, editorials and blog posts.
His mother emigrated from Ireland as a teenager and met his dad. Who was the son of immigrants and the first person in his family to go to college. His father went to law school at night and became a successful attorney in Manhattan. Dennis learned his work ethic from them. In his free time he enjoys skiing in the winter and playing golf in the summer, as well as hiking, photography, and travel. In his free time, he volunteers at Habitat for Humanity and Daybreak Homeless Shelter.
